This is a good formation that is suitable for people who like to play lots of through balls, if you like to use the long ball tactic, this formation is brilliant for you. But one problem this formation does have is the balance, it has a flat midfield, which means it can be difficult to link the midfield to the strikers, it also can be difficult for the midfield to get back in position to help the defense out, so the midfield has always been a bit of an issue with this formation. If you want to play it effectively, the right tactics and instructions are significant.

Firstly, Balanced on the defensive style, this is not a formation you can press in, it's just too narrow and tight, there's too much space out on the wings for people to just play around the press, so it just doesn't work in this formation. In terms of width, go to about 50. For the formation depth, go to around 60. You have to be careful because you don't obviously have that depth to kind of protect the back four, you can't afford to go too high, but you also need to make sure you are on the front foot and using those balls through to the strikers. As for the Build Up Play, go with the Long Ball, which works extremely well in this formation, especially if you've got some pacey players at front. We don't have a CAM & a center forward, we don't have anyone to link up, so from the midfield, it was always a long-through ball. In terms of the Chance Creation, if you want to be a bit more aggressive, playing on Direct Passing will leave quite a lot of space and make it quite difficult to defend, if you don't like that, just change the Chance Creation to Balanced, it will mean that the midfield will stay in position and it means that just the front three will make the runs in behind. Then the offensive width, go to around 65 to get those strikers a little bit wider.

- ST, LF & RF: all three of them on Get in Behind, Stay Central.

- Outside CM: Balanced Attack, Balanced Crossing Runs, Cover Center. These players are properly box-to-box midfielders, they do need to get forwards and assists, because we don’t have a CAM to link to the front three. Just allow these two midfielders to get forward and support the strikers and forwards, not necessarily to score goals, but just more to be able to carry the ball forwards.

- Inside CM: Drop Between Defenders, this is very effective if you are someone that struggles with defending, what will happen is the center midfielder will drop in between the back four, but when you lost possession, you can drag him out and you are not dragging out one of your center backs. If you are prone to drag out center backs, the Drop Between Defenders works really well, so you can only drag the CM back and allow the back four to still stay in position as supposed to. Stay Back While Attacking is also recommended.

- CB, LB & RB: have them all on Stay Back While Attacking just because the midfielders can be quite open.
